Iwas added to an alumni WhatsApp group
and removed in the same session. No
message. No reason. No warning.
Thad sent one message. Assalamu Alaikum
Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh.
That greeting is a prayer. A declaration of
peace. It was also apparently enough to get
me silently expelled from a community tied to
my own alma mater, Institut Teknologi
Bandung.
We talk a lot about toxic workplaces and
authoritarian managers. But the same
patterns exist in the informal spaces, alumni
groups, WhatsApp communities, Discord
servers, where there is zero institutional
accountability and one person holds all the
buttons.
| call this digital feudalism.
The admin who removes someone without
Notice is not protecting the community. They
are revealing that the community was always
just their personal property.
Real leaders make hard decisions
transparently, fairly, and with the dignity of
the other person intact. They do not
weaponize the remove button as a substitute
for a conversation they are too proud or too
afraid to have.
If you cannot explain, out loud, to the person
you just removed, exactly why you did it, you
have not made a leadership decision. You
have committed an act of cowardice with
administrative privileges.
I came with a greeting of peace. | was,
answered with a removal notice. That
contrast tells you everything you need to
know.
