Alleged Academic Fraud Exposed: ITB Undergraduate Thesis Claims to Solve Acute Mountain Sickness with a Breadboard Prototype That Was Never Field-Tested A disturbing case of alleged academic misconduct has come to light involving a final-year undergraduate thesis from Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), one of Indonesia's most prestigious engineering institutions. The thesis, titled "Rancang Bangun Perangkat Monitoring Pendaki Gunung Berbasis Internet of Things” (Design and Construction of a Mountain Climber Monitoring Device Based on Internet of Things), was submitted by Rahmat Fabhian Aminuddin The core claim of the work is that the author developed an loT-based wearable system to monitor mountain climbers in real time, detect risks such as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), track vital signs and location, and enable two-way communication without relying on constant internet connectivity. Only ONE supervisor signature appears on the approval page. The official approval statement ("“Telah disetujui dan disahkan sebagai Laporan Tugas Akhir") dated 21 Juni 2023 shows a signature and NIP only from (Dr. Waskita Adjiarto, S.T., M.), (Dr. Ir. Kusprasapta Mutijarsa, S.T., M.T.) is blank — no signature, no stamp, no approval. The “deployed” hardware is literally a breadboard prototype with loose jumper wires. Chapter IV of the thesis proudly displays photos labeled "Implementasi Hardware Perangkat Pengguna" and "implementasi Hardware Perangkat Pengelola” There is zero encapsulation, no waterproofing, no rugged casing, and no consideration for the extreme conditions of high-altitude mountain environment, constant humidity, condensation, physical shock, temperature swings, and vibration. Anyone with even basic field experience knows such a setup ‘would fail within minutes on a real trek. Yet the author claims this exact breadboard rig was successfully worn and tested by four climbers during acceptance testing. Acceptance test results with four participants appear fabricated. Tables IV.4.3.2 and IV.4.3.3 detail extensive “pass” results for scenarios involving wearing the device, reading vital signs and location data, receiving SOS notifications, and confirming alerts — all supposedly performed by four different pendaki. The comments sections contain suspiciously consistent positive feedback (“Pass", “sudah sesual ekspektasi") alongside minor nitpicks ‘that feel scripted. Given that the hardware shown is an exposed breadboard, it is highly implausible that four real mountain climbers carried and reliably used this fragile assembly in actual field conditions without catastrophic failure. The discrepancy strongly suggests the test data may have been invented rather than collected.
